NAWS Update 11/30/20

Hello!

We are writing to let you know about

And remind you about

FIPT review draft and bulletins

We have posted two different items related to the Fellowship Intellectual Property Trust, or FIPT for short. The first is proposed revisions to the FIPT that are posted for six-month Fellowship review from 1 December 2020 through 31 May 2021 at www.na.org/fipt.

In 2018, the World Service Conference decided to make zones with two or more unseated communities full voting participants at the WSC. Currently, the FIPT refers only to regional delegates as the decision makers, not to zonal delegates. WSC 2020 passed a motion to begin the process to revise the FIPT to reflect this change in Conference participants and approved a project to draft the proposed revision. The revision being proposed would allow seated zonal delegates to participate in FIPT and recovery literature decisions at the World Service Conference (WSC), in keeping with the 2018 Conference decision.

If changes are made to the Trust, corresponding changes will need to be made to the FIPT Operational Rules, but those changes can be made by the WSC itself. Any proposed changes to the Operational Rules will be discussed with Conference participants after the Fellowship review deadline for the Trust document and before all of this material is finalized for inclusion in the 2022 Conference Agenda Report (CAR).

The cover memo of the posting explains the revision and background in more detail. Please check it out if you have questions, and don’t forget to send in any input by 31 May 2021.

The other posting related to the FIPT is two new official World Services bulletins. You may already be familiar with the two communications from the Board: Group Conscience and NA Literature and Narcotics Anonymous Copyrights and Literature. Because these two pieces so clearly spell out some of the issues surrounding NA literature, copyrights, and group conscience, we have decided to make them Bulletins #34 and #35, respectively. You can find them with the other FIPT material at www.na.org/fipt  and on the page that lists the other bulletins, www.na.org/bulletins .

As you may know, World Services was recently involved in a US court case in which a group of members sought to remove NA World Services as Trustee of the FIPT. The judge’s final order has been issued, and the judge ruled that the members did not have standing to bring such a case. It seemed like a good time to issue these bulletins.

We have written a new introduction to Bulletin #34, and here’s a passage from that:

Decisions in NA are made by group conscience, and the vehicle to hear group conscience on a world level is the World Service Conference (WSC). The WSC is the means by which “NA groups have a mechanism to guide and direct the activities of NA World Services” (WSC Mission Statement).

No matter how convinced a group of individual members may be that their cause is legitimate, “we can only be governed by a loving God as expressed in our group conscience.” The individuals who brought the legal action were seeking to cancel the WSC decisions through a legal court. That is not how we make decisions in NA. We have paths to follow for issues that the Fellowship wants to discuss. When those paths tell you no, guided by our Second Tradition, the answer is not to try to go outside of NA to change that outcome.

We are unified as a Board in our commitment to the Fellowship’s conscience.

Changes to na.org

We have added a Media page to the NA website: www.na.org/media. This should make it easier to download and repost items on social media and use videos and other graphic-based resources at groups, events, and service bodies. Let us know what you think and whether you’d like to see anything added: worldboard@na.org.

We also just started posting these NAWS Update emails to the website on the same page as NAWS News www.na.org/nawsnews to make it easier to reference the information.

The rest of this email is reminders of items that were reported in the last eblast. If you want more information, you can find that eblast on www.na.org/nawsnews.

Virtual meetings survey reminder

The survey will be posted until the end of the year: www.na.org/toolbox.

Remember, you don’t have to answer every question. We welcome any input for the project.  Please spread the word!

Virtual Meetings Survey

We are putting together resources for virtual meetings, and we need your help. We posted a survey to collect input for the project www.na.org/toolbox. The survey will be up through the end of the calendar year, and the responses will help us collect experience on a wide range of topics and determine the next steps for the project. Please help us spread the word!

Virtual Meetings Webinar Report Posted

More than 600 people attended the 31 October webinar on virtual meetings, and we’ve posted a short report about the webinar as well as the PowerPoint and notes from some of the presenters. Spiritual Principle a Day Review and Input Batch 4

The SPAD project has posted entries on ten spiritual principles for Fellowship review and input through the end of January. Giving input not only helps the project, it gives you a taste of the writing so far. This batch is on anonymity, discernment, empathy, faith, gratitude, honesty, hope, open-mindedness, vigilance, and willingness. You can give input on as many or as few entries as you like. The entries are put together with the help of writing from members around the world. The current spiritual principles to write on are autonomy, conscience, fidelity, individuality, listening, powerlessness, self-discipline, serenity, and trust. NAWS Announcement 10/28/20

Hello!

We are writing with more information about the upcoming open webinar on virtual meetings.

Time

The webinar will be this Saturday, 31 October, 11:00 am – 1:00 pm, Pacific Daylight Time (Sunday for those of you across the dateline). Log-in information is at the end of this email.

Note: this is a two-hour meeting. We will open the room 10 minutes before the meeting.

Focus

Members from around the world have agreed to share some best practices for holding virtual meetings. Some of the many topics covered will be welcoming newcomers, connecting with the wider NA community and service structure, and signing attendance slips/court cards. There will be time to ask questions as well.

We will also let you know how you can get involved with the Local Service Toolbox Project, which is developing service tools for virtual meetings.

Technology

We will be using Zoom’s webinar feature, which means attendees will not be visible and will be muted. We have room for up to 1,000 members on the webinar, and we will also be streaming the meeting to YouTube at the same time. The meeting link will posted on the Toolbox Project page when the webinar starts: www.na.org/toolbox

Translations

Spanish and Portuguese interpretation feeds will be available. All members in the webinar, including English speakers, will need to select their language from the options at the bottom of the Zoom screen.

Questions

After the presentations, anyone logged onto the webinar itself (not watching from the YouTube link), can type a question for the presenters into the Q&A box. During the webinar itself we are asking that questions be relatively simple and that they be in English.

We don’t anticipate we will have time to answer all of the questions or to answer them word for word. We will try to group them and respond by topic. We will collect all of your questions as input for the project.

If you have more complicated questions, questions that don’t get answered during the webinar, or experience to share, email wb@na.org. We will respond via email, not during the webinar.

In-person events

We know many of you are making decisions about in-person NA events that were scheduled before the pandemic. The Conventions and Events Toolbox www.na.org/conventions has a resource on contracts that you may want to consider as you make those decisions. As always, if you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to write to us: worldboard@na.org.

NAWS Announcement 10/14/20

Hello,

We have scheduled the next open webinar on virtual meetings for 31 October, 11:00 am – 12:30 pm, Pacific Daylight Time. Save the date!

Like the last open webinar on virtual meetings, members will share their experience, and then there will be time for questions and answers.

In between now and the 31st we plan to post a survey to help us put together tools for virtual meetings, and we will talk more about the survey and that effort during the meeting too.

We plan to try the webinar format for the first time, which will allow up to 1,000 people in the room at once, and we will also stream it on YouTube—though you won’t be able to ask a question unless you are logged onto he webinar itself.

We will send out a reminder with the log in information when it is closer to the date.

We hope to see you there!

NAWS Toolbox Project Update 9/25/20

Hello,

We are emailing you today as you have expressed an interest in the Local Service Toolbox Project.

We are happy to let you know that we have posted GSR Basics online here www.na.org/toolbox, along with two GSR report templates and the service structure diagram from A Guide to World Services in NA. We would like to express our gratitude to the members that shared their experience and local resources to help create this tool.

The next focus of the project will be online meetings best practices, and carrying the NA message effectively and virtually. To prepare for the creation of this much needed service tool we have started to gather resources relevant to virtual NA meetings here – www.na.org/virtual. We also hope to have a survey and discussion tools posted online soon to begin the process of gathering your thoughts and ideas – please check the Toolbox Project webpage regularly for those resources!

If you wish to no longer receive updates about the Local service Toolbox project please email toolbox@na.org with “unsubscribe” in the subject line.

With all good wishes,

The Local Service Toolbox Project team.

NAWS Announcement 9/10/20

Hello,

New Recovery Literature

We have a new IP! The 2020 World Service Conference unanimously approved the pamphlet, Mental Health in Recovery as our newest piece of recovery literature. The pamphlet, IP #30, is now posted on na.org and is available for purchase from World Services, as inventory item number #3130, and it is priced at 33 cents: www.na.org/webstore.

Mental Health in Recovery “reflects the shared experiences of NA members, including those who have found it necessary to seek outside help for mental health concerns and other members who are recovering alongside them.” The pamphlet includes sections titled Seeking Professional Help, Medication and Mental Health, Stigma and Shame, Recovery Happens in NA, and Supporting Each Other.

We hope it helps many members. Thank you to everyone who contributed input and ideas to the project.

Contribution Goal #1

As you probably know, NA World Services has been financially affected by the global pandemic. Even before the crisis hit, we were discussing how to shift our financial model from one that relies upon literature sales to a more sustainable model that depends upon member contributions. It’s a huge shift and we know it won’t happen overnight, but over time.

One way members can help is to consider making a recurring monthly contribution to World Services: www.na.org/contribute. Some of us contribute the amount of our clean time each month, some more, some less. In February, 50 members had recurring contributions. As of this writing, there are more than 500. Our first goal in the journey to become self-supporting through member contributions is to increase the number of recurring monthly contributions to 1,000 by the end of October.

We recognize that not everyone is able to contribute financially. Some of us contribute more through service or sponsorship. Thank you for doing your part whatever that is. We appreciate everything that members do to carry the message and grow NA. That no addict seeking recovery need ever die from the horrors of addiction.

Reminders

Don’t forget:

  • NAWS now has an Instagram account: www.instagram.com/narcoticsanonymous
