60th Anniversary White Book

We ran out of copies of the 60th anniversary White Bookbriefly, but it is back in stock. As a reminder, this special edition contains the complete English Little White Book, plus stories from the 13 other language versions translated into English. We are trying to build back inventory, but in the meantime, we appreciate your patience when we are out of stock of an item.

Unity Day Webinar

On Unity Day, 3 September, 11:00am–12:30pm, Pacific Daylight Time (18:00–19:30), we are hosting a recovery meeting with six speakers, long-term members and members from around the globe. At the close, we will join with members around the world to say the Serenity Prayer.

SPAD

Translations of SPAD

We are pleased to hear members are eager to read A Spiritual Principle a Day (SPAD). In a number of places, that eagerness has resulted in translations undertaken by individuals or groups of members. The enthusiasm is understandable, but there is a well-established process to translate NA literature. It’s a careful, methodical process, guided by NA members experienced in NA translations that includes the local NA community’s participation and approval. World Services goes to great lengths to protect NA literature so that it all belongs to the Fellowship as a whole. Unofficial translations can sometimes have unintended consequences. The irony of translations that happen outside of the established process is that, even though they are usually motivated by good intentions, they can actually undermine members’ control over NA literature.

We just launched a daily email subscription for A Spiritual Principle a Day. The book was approved by consensus in April at the World Service Conference and should be available for purchase later this year. In the meantime, you can sign up to receive each day’s reading via email: www.na.org/subscribe. As Fellowship-approved literature, SPAD can be read in NA meetings. We hope the email subscription makes it easier for meetings that wish to make SPAD part of their format in some way.

All of NAWS subscriptions are free. We are able to provide these services due, in part, to the generous contributions of our members. We are writing to announce several things:

• A price increase is scheduled for 2023
• The 60th Anniversary White Book is available for sale
• A Spiritual Principle a Day was approved at WSC 2022

Price Increase

We wish it was not necessary, but costs of production have risen so dramatically that we believe scheduling a price increase is prudent. Effective 1 January 2023, the price of all books and bronze medallions will increase 12%.

We are not recommending increases on the materials our NA groups most frequently give away, even though our costs have increased substantially on these items as well. That means there will be no increase to the current prices of IPs, booklets, keytags, or chips. This feels the most helpful way to show that we are all in this together and to do what we can to ease the burden on groups.

60th Anniversary White Book

At last, the 60th Anniversary White Book is available for sale. This special edition collects English translations of all 85 stories in the 13 language versions that have local personal stories plus the eight stories in the English Little White Book. SPADis Approved Literature

We have a new book on the way! A Spiritual Principle a Day was approved with consensus support at the 2022 World Service Conference. As is our typical practice, when the new book was approved, we removed the approval draft from the website. It can take around six months for production of a book after it is approved by the World Service Conference. In the meantime, we intend to begin offering a free daily email subscription as we do with Just for Today, soon. As approved literature, SPAD, can be read at a group level.

Annual Report

We just posted the 2021 Annual Report: www.na.org/ar. For the second year in a row, the AR is digital. If you prefer a printable, downloadable version, the PDF posted on the same page has all of the same information.

This report covers the period from 1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021. There is always a delay between the end of the fiscal year and the publication of our annual report because of the complexity of our operations. We have branches in five different countries with different currencies. We also undergo an annual external audit. We hope you enjoy the report; it gives a comprehensive look at our finances for the year.

Virtual Meeting Basics

We are very pleased to have posted the delegate review draft of Virtual Meeting Basics on www.na.org/toolbox and www.na.org/virtual. This draft has been years in the making, and many of you have helped. Thank you! It’s a great resource that covers a wide range of topics about virtual meetings—from how to welcome newcomers and deal with sponsorship, clean time celebrations, and literature, to tips for going hybrid and how to keep the meeting safe from disruption.

April 1-30, 2022 will be hosted by the New England Region of Narcotics Anonymous.Spend the month with members around the world as we celebrate A Life Worth Living. Our purpose is to keep what we have by giving it away, and to realize Our Vision by further developing the practice of increased individual recurring contributions to NA World Services.

Attracting members to service is a topic that never seems to go out of season, but we have received more inquiries than usual lately. As many service bodies begin meeting in person after not doing so for months because of the pandemic, it seems that participation has dropped off in many places.

On 19 March, 11 am – 1 pm, Pacific Daylight Time, we’ll hear from members around the world about what’s working for their groups and service bodies. There will be time for questions from attendees. Revising The Loner IP

We are beginning work on a project passed at the last World Service Conference to revise IP #21: The Loner, Staying Clean in Isolation. The world has changed a lot since The Loner was written in 1986, and the IP is very outdated. All NA literature projects begin by asking the Fellowship what to include or focus on in the piece of literature. To that end, we have posted a survey (www.na.org/survey). We also have posted workshop materials on that same page so that you can discuss ideas with your group or service body.

What do you think should be changed in the IP? (As a reminder, you can find the current version posted here www.na.org/ips.) We encourage all members to fill out the survey, which will be posted until the end of August 2022. If you have pre-pandemic experience recovering as a loner, we are particularly interested in hearing from you.

Did you know all of NA’s books are now available in electronic versions? The electronic version of Just for Today has just been published. You can find them all from the links posted on www.na.org/elit. It’s great to be able to carry our NA library with us wherever we go and search the books for a specific word or principle.

Late last week, an NA member with a careful eye let us know that we inadvertently duplicated one of the entries in the approval draft of A Spiritual Principle a Day. The 29 May entry for vigilance is a duplicate of the entry on 2 November.

We had circulated five different entries on vigilance for Fellowship review. We intended to include all five in the book, but only four made it into the approval draft in the CAR, with one of the four repeated.

Fortunately, the oversight was called to our attention right before the December Conference participant web meeting. On Saturday, we were able to poll participants to ask how they thought we should proceed—whether we should keep the approval draft as is or replace the duplicate entry with the entry that went out for review but was omitted from the approval draft by accident.

The overwhelming majority of participants responding to the poll (more than 90%) felt we should replace the duplicate entry with the fifth entry on vigilance that went out for review. This seems like the most logical solution to us, and participants seem to be in consensus. The board had an email exchange after the Conference participant web meeting and we are in consensus to replace the entry. We have corrected the draft that is posted on the conference page www.na.org/conference and posted the corrected entry for 29 May as a separate file as well: https://www.na.org/admin/include/spaw2/uploads/pdf/conference/CAR/SPAD_29-30%20May%20replacements.pdf. The corrected draft has January 2022 on the cover.

As a reminder, paper copies of the draft are $10 plus shipping and handling from our webstore (www.na.org/webstore); search for item #9146. We will deplete our stock of the already printed drafts for sale by inserting the corrected page and then we will have the fully corrected drafts for sale.

We regret the mistake; however, because SPAD is still an approval draft and not yet published the errors are easy to correct. These days it seems worth mentioning that reductions in office staff have increased the likelihood of errors in the work we do. Fewer people are doing the work, which means not as many eyes to review material. We hope Fellowship contributions to World Services continue to increase and we are able to bring more staff back. The important thing here is that Fellowship involvement in the project has not been affected and we have an additional entry that has already been reviewed by the Fellowship. Thank you again to the member who found the error.
